181 Chinese miners have been trapped since Friday in a mining accident when a dike on a nearby river burst and sent water flooding into the mine and trapping the miners. Other victims were trapped in a nearby shaft in the Huayuan Mining Co. mine.
According to media reports, rescuers have worked desperately since the dike breakage to pump out water that has poured into the mine from the river. According to media reports, water has risen to heights of over 50 feet, and the outlook is not very optimistic for the miners.
China’s mining accident occurs in the wake of two recent U.S. accidents in which several miners are feared to have lost their lives in Utah.
